AZCentral.com - Scientists have long touted the effects of hyperbaric oxygen chambers for deep-sea divers. But the technology has other healing properties that could turn back the clock, one Scottsdale physician says. Dr. Carl Sonder, who specializes in cosmetic treatments, has a hyperbaric chamber at his newly practice in north Scottsdale. Sonder said the high-pressure device - only one of a handful in the Valley - can heal wounds, cure infections and prime the body for cosmetic surgery.
His practice, Adam & Eve Medical Aesthetics, also offers Botox, skin resurfacing and many other beauty procedures.
If you pre-treat a patient (with hyperbaric therapy) before aesthetic surgery, you have less bleeding, less fragmenting tissue, Sonder said. "Pre- and post-treatment, it accelerates healing by 50 percent."
Sonder said hyperbaric medicine can treat many ailments, including brain injuries, as it floods neural tissue with 100 percent oxygen. His claims are nothing new. Scottsdale Hyperbaric Medicine, 13402 N. Scottsdale Road, uses its chamber to treat cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, anemia and strokes, according to its Web site.
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society lists only decompression sickness, blood loss, carbon-monoxide poisoning and burns as some of the treatable conditions.
Sonder said his other location, Regency Medical Aesthetics in Phoenix, will expand soon to include three or four hyperbaric chambers.
Sonder, who has tried the therapy, recently merged practices with Dr. Nicholas Soldo, medical director at the Arizona Vein and Skin Rejuvenation Institute.
Together they offer a number of therapies, including facial rejuvenation and photo-facial treatments, which they say can help with rosacea.
I have probably personally done the procedure more than anyone else in the world, said Soldo, who moved his practice to the Adam & Eve building at 31390 N. Scottsdale Road. "Next week, we have a patient from Brazil."
