Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and TBI

Posted 16th December 2009

National Association for Uniformed Services (NAUS) - NAUS President Bill Matz and Legislative Director Rick Jones attended a meeting in DC asking for support from NAUS and other military/veterans organizations for further research into the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in the treatment of service members' traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has proven effective in treating at least 13 other medical conditions. HBOT uses a controlled atmospheric pressure to saturate a patient with high levels of oxygen to promote healing. A small test of about 30 Iraq/Afghanistan war casualties has yielded very positive and encouraging results in treating TBI. There are other civilian studies that also support this treatment method for TBI patients.
Over a year ago, DoD announced a clinical trial for HBOT but no progress has been made due to lack of resources to design the test and begin testing patients. NAUS will be urging DoD to expand HBOT testing and indicated treatment(s) as soon as possible.
